What to Expect When Dating a Trust Fund Baby
“I don’t really want no trust fund baby
I like my women independent
And I say to people, “That’s my lady”
And we don’t need nothing else.”
Sings the boy band Why Don’t We on their 2017 single.
Aside from being such a catchy bop, this made me pause in my tracks. Is dating a trust fund baby really that bad?
You may even be thinking, what is a trust fund baby to begin with?
A trust fund baby, according to Trust & Will, is a person who benefits from an established trust account. Due to its association with the stereotype of a pampered person who is exempt from working, the term carries a negative connotation.
In reality, they don’t always have the ostentatious lifestyle or sense of superiority that most people claim they do. Many even have jobs despite having the stability of their trust fund.
Pros of Dating a Trust Fund Baby
Now that we’re here, let’s break down the pros and cons of dating a trust fund baby, starting with the former:
They Won’t Rely on You for Money
As people with financially-secured futures, it’s expected that they’ll be less dependent on their partners compared to others. Being protected by the trust funds they were given as beneficiaries gives them a financial edge, which means you’re not at risk of becoming their sugar mommy or daddy.
They Mostly Feel Secure in Life
As you can see, having a trust fund necessitates a legal document establishing the trust. They receive expert advice on how to use the funds to ensure that they are completely supported in every way. This, in turn, makes them feel more secure in life, giving them a healthy sense of self.
They Pursue Their Own Path
Given their financial advantage, they most likely have the freedom to pursue any goals, whether it’s related to relationships, careers, hobbies, or other areas. This means that not all trust fund babies are spoiled brats. In reality, these people frequently work and simply do not disclose that they have a trust fund.
Cons of Dating a Trust Fund Baby
Now, let’s turn our attention to where things could go wrong and where the contrast lies:
They Can Be Too Spoiled
This could be because they were overindulged as children. As a result, they can be insensitive to others’ needs because they are accustomed to having their own met on a whim. This does not imply that they’re all the same, but it’s likely that many share this trait.
They May Lack the Motivation to Work
Conversely, there are those who aren’t motivated at all to work because they’ve never needed to. They may try to accomplish things on a whim, but such ventures may fold due to their lack of genuine desire, motivation, or skill. Some trust fund babies even lack the desire for budgeting because, again, they’ve never had to.
They Could Lack a Fear of Failure
Some trust fund babies may not fear failure due to their coddled lifestyles. This makes them careless, not only in business but also in relationships. Their unearned confidence could lead to nonchalance and a general lack of appreciation for what they have. This is because they know they have the resources to have access to other options.
Dating a trust fund baby still has its ups and downs, just like dating anybody else. Although they come with some advantages, a relationship won’t succeed unless you both accentuate your strengths and address your shortcomings.
