Saying “I Love You” For the First Time
You meet someone great, you go on a date, and you phone each other until it gets late. Rhymes aside, things are going well with your current relationship.
Then feelings get involved and you didn’t expect to fall deeply in love so quickly. Then again, it’s too early to tell if what you’re feeling really is love. There are still a few things you need to figure out before you say those three important words.
“I love you.”
But even when you have your feelings sorted, you still have to wait for the perfect opportunity to express your feelings.
Take it easy — it’s not as hard as it sounds. It only will be if you make it harder for yourself.
Think of it like a rollercoaster ride.
It’s scary and intimidating and you swear you never want to get on it. But people keep raving about it. You can’t help but get curious and give it a try. You realize after the ride that it wasn’t so bad and that you scared yourself more than you should have.
That’s exactly how it works.
No one is prepared to say I love you for the first time. But when you eventually get around it, it comes out smooth like butter. All it takes is a little bit of courage, then you rip it out like a band aid.
When is the Perfect Time to Say “I Love You”
Quite frankly, there’s no such thing as the perfect time. There’s isn’t even a wrong or right way of doing it.
Everyone has a unique relationship dynamic. Some might prefer to affirm their love through actions, while some would prefer hearing it from the one they love. You don’t have to follow what the rest are doing. Just go with whatever works for you as a couple.
There are other factors that you have to weigh before you confess. If you think that your partner doesn’t reciprocate your love yet, then hold it off. If you think it’s too early to say “I love you”, then it probably is.
Having doubts just means you need to gather a lot more information before making a final decision. Trust in your instincts — your brain is smarter than you think it is and it can pick up the subtle signs you’re looking for.
What’s Your Love Language
Love doesn’t always have to be expressed through words. It can be expressed in many other ways.
Take the 5 Love Languages, for example. This is a concept Gary Chapman came up with to explain the different ways love is being expressed. So it’s not just words that can make your partner understand how you feel.
If you’re not ready to say “I love you” just yet, here are the other ways it can be expressed:
- Words of affirmation
- Quality time
- Physical touch
- Acts of service
- Receiving gifts
Find out which ones you resonate with. You don’t have to decide right now, nor should you limit yourself to one. There can be multiple answers, so don’t be afraid to try them all out.
There will come a time when you are ready to admit your feelings. In the meantime, you should enjoy your special moments with your partner. After all, you still have a long way to go.
