Have you ever wished for a time machine to take you back to a simpler, more romantic era? Like how our parents or grandparents tell us about their drive-in date nights or how they had to light a candle at their bedside to write back to the love letter they waited so long to receive?

Well, you’re not alone. I, myself, am a big fan of old-fashioned date ideas. Something about them gives me serious, warm, fuzzy feelings. But it’s not like I’m completely shutting down suggestions for a date night at home or at the movies. So long as the date night movies are something we’ll both enjoy.

That said, I’ve put together a list of good, if a little corny, films that you and your date can watch. Many of us appreciate a good dose of romance nowadays, and a movie night is an excellent way to achieve this.

A Selection of Date Night Movies to Watch

You may or may not end up watching all of these, but best believe these films are fine ways to get to know someone just going by their reactions:

Dead Poets Society (1989)

This will be a good watch, especially if your date enjoys intellectual stimulation through thought-provoking films. As a writer, I must say this has got to be one of my favorite films to watch whenever I need a good pick-me-up, especially given how chaotic and unsettling our society can be these days.

The movie explores how students can question the status quo and reject traditional norms. All thanks to Mr. Keating, played by the late Robin Williams, who made a group of boys transform their identity through the teachings of poetry.

The Before Trilogy (1995–2013)

If you’re planning to spend longer hours with her, shoot your shot with a trilogy. The Before Trilogy consists of three films: Before Sunrise (1995), Before Sunset (2004), and Before Midnight (2013), which depict Jesse and Celine’s relationship in their 20s, and 30s, and as parents.

It’s a common question if you should watch it in order, and the answer is, of course! The film is essentially about how people spend their time and what makes it worthwhile. Jesse, who’s played by Ethan Hawke, also starred in Dead Poet’s Society as Todd.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

This film is a solid pick if you both like romance and science fiction wrapped in one package. It delves into the complexities of relationships and the pain of loss, with the characters having the option of completely erasing memories of their ex from their minds.

This movie makes you realize that, although breakups can feel like the whole world is shattering, living an ignorant life without painful memories is meaningless. It only makes us less human, as beauty is also found in acknowledging and rising above the pain.

Her (2013)

This movie is an ode to the future. Imagine a world in which artificial intelligence has control over your personal devices and can meet all of your needs, even to the extent that you start to develop romantic feelings with them. I know, mind-boggling, but who knows? People nowadays treat ChatGPT as an emotional confidante rather than just a system that provides immediate answers to homework.

Aside from the main plot, which revolves around falling for an AI woman, the film also explores how people cope with divorce and the struggles of finding a satisfying relationship following a difficult breakup.

La La Land (2016)

Dating someone fond of musicals? La La Land is a musical drama featuring a whimsical romance between two people chasing their dreams, as played by Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. It’s almost impossible to end the day without experiencing the “last song syndrome” from this film’s excellent soundtrack.

This film perfectly captures the difficulties that come with balancing personal dreams and relationships. Whether or not you end up with your person is a matter of weighing what’s best for both of you individually.

Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)

Surreal comedy, absurd science fiction, fantasy, drama, and romance? This movie encompasses all of that. Despite its bizarreness, this film has a genuine emotional payoff. One thing is certain: watching this movie will keep you glued to your seat for its entire duration.

The plot centers around a Chinese-American immigrant woman who discovers that she must connect with parallel universe versions of herself to prevent a powerful being from destroying the multiverse. The main character is portrayed by Michelle Yeoh, the first Asian star to win the Academy Award for Best Actress, which she received at the 2023 Oscars.

Whether you’re planning to have your own in-drive movie night or just get cozy with a blanket at home and some popcorn and wine, you’ll do great with this list of date night movies. Make it a fun experience and see what your date is comfortable with!
